Writing good web content: a few tips for starters

Constructive criticism always helps

Get a mini focus group together made up of colleagues, business acquaintances or even just a few mates in the pub. Ask them to comment on your web content.

Do they think it is coherent and useful? Does your web content give them enough information about your company? What else would they like to know about your business? Can they spot any mistakes?

What does your web visitor see?

You know what you do, but does your web content (especially on your homepage) make it clear to a new user? Writing a concise mission statement about your business can clarify your message.

Clear the clutter

Don't overcomplicate your pages. Take some time out to read through every page. Is there any information that may confuse the user? Are you mixing different themes on the same page? Would it help the user to break down existing web content into separate pages?

Reel them in

Your website is there to encourage new business - so make sure there is a point of contact within your web content on every page. Make it as simple as possible for your web visitor to instantly get in touch.

Be consistent

It's very easy to get in a muddle. Make sure headings, quote marks, fonts etc. in your web content are uniform in style. Keep your paragraphs short to make the page easier to scan and the text easier to digest. Always triple check your web content spelling and grammar as everyone makes mistakes.

Blow your own trumpet

You work hard and you are proud of your business. So, if you have favourable comments from clients, include them in your web content. It will build your business credibility in the user's mind. But ensure you always get written permission from clients to use their quotes for any marketing purposes.

On your business case

Can you include any business case studies in your web content? Potential clients will be interested in projects you have undertaken previously and may be inspired to commission you.

Make the most of it

Are there ways your web content can assist your business and your user further? Have you implemented appropriate search engine optimisation. Can you feature articles, factsheets, business tips or news to add interest? Think of ways in which your web content will encourage the user to find your website, or visit it again.

Warm and friendly

Finally, are you friendly enough? You can be both professional and approachable. Try to use a warm and welcoming tone for your web content. This will establish a good working relationship with any potential clients from the outset.
